2024 Great Decisions Discussion Series & Lectures

2024 Great Decisions Discussion Series & Lectures In-Person

Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. The program model involves independently reading the weekly article in the Great Decisions Briefing Book, then meeting as a group to watch a 20-30 minute master class recorded lecture, followed by a one hour civil discussion about a current critical global issue facing America today. Our discussion facilitator is library director Chris Johnson. You are not expected to have any special knowledge of the topic to participate, the only requirement is that you read the assigned article in advance of our discussion.

This year's topics are:

There is a $35 materials fee for the briefing book that can be paid by cash or check, made payable to Waterford Public Library, Inc., at the first session. Please register for the series using the link below. In your registration, please indicate if you would like the library to purchase a printed book for you, or you do have the option to purchase either a printed or digital version on your own using this link.

On March 14 and 21, we will host two program-related lectures by Dr. Eric Fleury, Assistant Professor of Government and International Relations at Connecticut College. The March 14 topic will be the current situation in the Middle East and on March 21 the topic will be on NATO.

The third lecture on May 9 will discuss the current situation in Russia. No registration or fee is required to attend the lectures.

With the attack on Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Islamic State (also known asISIS) came roaring back into the public consciousness after years of relativequiet. Why did the group attack Russia, and what are the global implicationsof the Putin regime having to confront a new threat while also pressing thewar against Ukraine? Have we entered a new age of terrorism, and how mightit affect the United States?

Registration is required, one form will enroll you, and an optional partner, for the entire series of 8 discussions and 3 lectures.
